Visitors’ code of conduct and 2020 Influenza Vaccination required by all visitors into an aged care facility

May 1, 2020

Dear Residents, Families and Friends,

As we have previously advised, the Chief Health Officer of Victoria has directed that all visitors to an aged care facility are required to be vaccinated with the current vaccine against influenza.

Entry to the building:

  • Only essential services will be permitted to enter the facility
  • All visitors will be required to undertake screening and sign confirmation before entering the facility and they must comply with the infection control measures as directed.
  • Visitors must have a current vaccination against influenza and provide evidence of the vaccination.
  • As well as other exclusion criteria relating to travel, contact with known COVID-19 cases or experiencing any illness.

There are penalties that apply for the individual and for businesses that do not comply with these directives.

This advice is consistent with the directives issued by the Chief Health Officer of Victoria and his delegates on 7th April 2020 in accordance with the declared a state of emergency throughout the State of Victoria due to the serious risk to public health in Victoria from coronavirus (COVID-19).

Thank you to all who have already provided the appropriate evidence for your vaccination and we remind you of the current restrictions of one visit per day with a maximum of 2 visitors for 45 mins.

If you have not provided the appropriate evidence, which may be a statement or record from a health practitioner, or an immunisation history statement available from Medicare online or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app. We request that all visitors provide appropriate evidence of immunisation status prior to entering the building. A letter from a medical practitioner stating you don’t want to have the flu vaccine due to past reactions such as fever, or rash is not sufficient reason to be exempt from having the current vaccination under the exclusion criteria from the Department of Health. Please understand that we ONLY accept medical letters that fit the exclusion criteria and without that you will be refused entry to our home. Please understand we did not make these laws, nor are they personal, we are just obligated as an Aged Care Provider to enforce the laws as set out by both the State and Federal Government.

We understand these are challenging times and thank you for your understanding, compliance, and respect. We are working together to protect everyone during this pandemic. If you feel that you need more information or explanation, speak with the management team at your home, so we work together to answer your concerns. Sadly, some of our staff and management have experienced abuse and aggression from family members and other visitors. We will not tolerate any aggression, abuse or violence towards our staff or Managers who are lawfully abiding by directives and working to prevent the spread of the virus.

Kind regards
