Re: Test results from Embracia Moonee Valley
We wish to inform you that yesterday 261 tests were conducted for residents and staff. All staff results came back NEGATIVE. We had one resident from our Northerly household test positive to COVID-19 and ALL other residents across all households have tested NEGATIVE. Given that our resident who has tested positive does have a tendency to wander, we have made the decision, in collaboration with the State and Commonwealth authorities, to move this resident to our Winx household, which currently is unoccupied following our previous outbreak. This resident is currently asymptomatic and has one staff member with them 24/7.
We have been informed that we will have another round of testing for all staff and residents on Sunday. We will inform you of those results on Monday as they come in. Therefore, please do not expect a formal letter over the weekend as there is nothing further to report in relation to this lockdown.
We wish to address the matter of the use of agency staff. Prior to our first lockdown, Embracia Moonee Valley had NEVER used agency as we have always worked hard to recruit, support, and retain our own staff and with great success. However, when we found out late Tuesday that we had a staff member test positive, we immediately started our contact tracing all through Tuesday night. We phoned staff who worked closely with the staff member and asked them to isolate at home. We completed our contact tracing at 11pm Tuesday night and this resulted in 11 of our staff from Northerly household having to isolate. You can imagine the impact this has to our roster. Fortunately, we had enough other staff to cover all of these isolating staff, however, there is still an increased need in staffing. As we are in lockdown, our team are wearing full PPE which requires them to change every time they move between rooms and residents, this is more time consuming and therefore requires additional staff. Also, during a lockdown when we have a known case, we require additional cleaning staff to maintain our deep cleans. The need for all these extra staff is where we need to utilise agency staff.
In an instant, without warning, we were down 12 staff, (1 positive case and 11 close contacts) and an increased workload. Without the use of agency staff at this point, we potentially compromise care and safety, and that is not an option. We have had criticism for the use for agency staff and we ask you to ask yourself, what is the safe alternative? Embracia will not compromise on the safety and quality of care for our residents and staff, so in these unprecedented times, we do not apologise for the use of agency staff. We can inform you that already since Wednesday, we have employed an additional 6 staff who will only work at Embracia, in an attempt to minimise our need for agency staff. We will continue to employ more staff as we did during our last lockdown, which resulted in 30 additional staff, which was a mammoth team effort.
