Round 2 Test results from Embracia Moonee Valley

Re: Round 2 Test results from Embracia Moonee Valley

Following our testing yesterday at Embracia Moonee Valley, we had 253 tests conducted for residents and staff and we have all results back already.  We are saddened to report that we have five additional positive test results, which is three residents and two staff, and all are from our Northerly household which is our memory support (dementia) household.  We also had four residents from Northerly refusing testing with Melbourne Pathology when they were on site, however, since then, our nurse was able to encourage these residents to be swabbed and sent the sample to pathology for urgent testing.  The two staff are isolating at home and two of the three residents are asymptomatic. The other resident has developed a high temperature, but with paracetamol, the temperature came down and the resident is currently fine.  All three of these residents have been moved to Winx household as part our cohorting process, as we try to keep all other residents and staff COVID free.  All other residents in all other households have tested NEGATIVE.  We also had a staff member who was already isolating at home due to being a close contact, has tested positive.  They independently went and got tested and have returned a positive test.  They continue their isolation at home.

We all know this virus is incredibly contagious and it is even more challenging when an outbreak occurs in an area with people living with dementia.  We have increased staff to support residents to stay in their rooms and to continually redirect them back to their rooms, but this is more challenging a process when working with those who often do not cognitively understand.  Therefore, it is important that we have moved these positive residents as soon as possible to Winx household to stop the spread.  We have also increased cleaning staff to continue our deep clean.

Our team has been tirelessly working on the roster to optimise the use of Embracia staff and minimise the use of agency.  We have already employed a further 6 staff to join the Embracia team.  Additionally, we have made best efforts to re-work our roster to have as many of our COVID recovered staff working in both Winx and Northerly household.  By this we mean our Embracia staff who haver previously tested positive to COVID-19 back in July and have recovered and are back at work.  It is considered that these staff have lowest risk of contracting COVID-19 having already recovered from it, therefore, we have attempted to use as many of these staff to care for our residents in these two households.

Our management team has daily meetings with both Commonwealth and State government as well as Western Health, the Safety and Quality Commission and an Outbreak management squad. Together we discuss resident wellbeing, staffing and workforce matters, PPE, and equipment, testing and infection control.  At these meetings we can provide feedback to the various levels of authority as well as seek support and clarification on various matters.  Unfortunately, all our questions were for DHHS and they failed to attend the meeting, although representatives had accepted the invitation, they were a no show the meeting.  We have had to again send more emails for answers and again we wait for them to respond.

We understand that these are difficult times and we feel your pain and frustration in being in lockdown, particularly so soon from our last lockdown.  We will again do all that we can to contain the spread of the virus, keep you informed in the most honest and transparent way and we will not give up advocating for our residents to ensure this lockdown does not go on any longer than is needed.  We truly do all appreciate your support and patience at this time.
