What is the Eden Alternative™?

The Eden Alternative™ is a philosophy based on ensuring health, wellness and quality of life within our aged care communities. There are 10 principles that encourage everyone to view ageing and moving into aged care as a continuation of a life worth living, where people continue to learn, grow and remain in charge of their destiny.
The Eden Alternative™ targets three afflictions that affect aged care residents, these are: loneliness, helplessness and boredom. The 10 principles of the Eden Alternative™ show how companionship and caring for other people and things such as plants, animals and children can improve the residents quality of life. It is about ensuring variety and spontaneity remain an integral part of everyday life and that life isn’t too structured with rules and routines.
The Eden Alternative™ helps residents by focusing on what people can do, rather than what they can’t. The Eden Alternative™ creates a new life for aged care residents. It’s about creating a vibrant home where residents are empowered to make decisions and choices, both big and small, as well as take risks and continue to set goals and fulfill their hopes and dreams.
Apart from the excellent care delivered by our nurses, carers and staff, this can be seen by the attention we give to our landscaped gardens, birdlife, resident pets, cafes, lounge and dining areas and more. We also have a Lifestyle Coordinator who engages the residents and staff in daily activities and ensures the residents are the drivers of daily decisions in the home.

The Eden Alternative™ principles inspire and promote change within the aged care sector, they challenge pre-conditioned views and thoughts about ageing, and create new ways of doing things that aim to transform traditional aged care culture in Australia today. It encourages high community and family involvement.

The Eden Alternative™ isn’t a religion. It’s simply a philosophy to a better way of life for our residents.
We believe it’s a better way to approach aged care living and culture. It’s a holistic approach that looks at maintaining the wellbeing of elders, promotes participation in the community and improves spiritual and emotional wellbeing.
We provide Eden Alternative™ support, education and mentoring throughout the year and encourage everyone to get involved.
